The Picture of Dorian Gray

(1945)Directed by Albert Lewin111 minDrama, Horror, Fantasy
“Why did women talk about Dorian Gray in whispers?”

Dorian Gray (Hurd Hatfield), a handsome young man in Victorian London, wishes that his portrait could age in his place so that he never has to. Lord Henry Wotton (George Sanders) feeds the wish with his easy talk of pleasure, and Albert Lewin keeps the house, the painting and the polished drawing rooms as a quiet setting for the bargain. Beneath the manners sits a plain idea: a face that never changes can hide a man who does.
