The Pied Piper

(1972)Directed by Jacques Demy90 minFantasy, Drama
“Come children of the universe, let Donovan take you away, far far away.”

The Pied Piper (Donovan) is a wandering minstrel who reaches Hamelin in midsummer 1349, as the Black Death spreads across northern Germany. The town is busy with a wedding and a cathedral, while its Burgermeister (Roy Kinnear) and priests care more for dowries, taxes and their own souls than for the sick. Jacques Demy follows the Piper as he offers to clear the rats for a fee, and he is a man who keeps his promises.
