A traveling singer, Serafin (Gene Kelly), falls for Manuela Alva (Judy Garland), a girl engaged to the town's richman, Don Pedro Vargas (Walter Slezak), who spends her private hours dreaming of the legendary pirate Macoco. To win her attention he passes himself off as the pirate. Vincente Minnelli stages Cole Porter's songs as full theatrical numbers, with the color and movement turned up to match Manuela's daydreams.
