The Place Without Limits
“Below heaven is hell, and below hell there is...”
Every trace of the town's old honor seems to hang on one question: what happens when Pancho (Gonzalo Vega) comes home to a place where La Manuela (Roberto Cobo), the aging drag performer, lives in the brothel run by La Japonesa (Lucha Villa)? Arturo Ripstein shoots the small Mexican town in grainy 1970s light, close enough that you can see the sweat. Between La Manuela and Pancho runs an attraction neither will name, and the whole town is watching it.
