The Portrait of a Lady

In the late nineteenth century, Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman) is a young American who turns down the marriages offered to her and wants to see the world on her own terms. Her cousin has her written into his dying father's will, and Isabel finds herself rich. Jane Campion follows her into Europe, where Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich) and Madame Serena Merle (Barbara Hershey) wait, and where being free turns out to depend on who is standing beside you.
