Why would a famous poet's mail suddenly matter to the only man on a small Italian island willing to carry it? Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi) delivers it every day to the exiled Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret), and he starts asking about the words in the letters. Michael Radford lets their talk wander, and the lessons in metaphor become the way Mario reaches for Beatrice Russo (Maria Grazia Cucinotta).
