Days before a coronation, the king of Ruritania vanishes, and the crown is about to land on the wrong head. Major Rudolf Rassendyll (Ronald Colman), an English visitor who happens to share the king's face, is asked to stand in for him. John Cromwell has him fall for Princess Flavia (Madeleine Carroll), the bride he is meant to be only pretending to court, and what she feels for the man is real, whoever is wearing the crown.
