Rudolf Rassendyll (Stewart Granger) is an Englishman who happens to share the face of King Rudolf V, the heir to a throne someone wants empty. When the king is marked for assassination, the two men switch places, and Rudolf takes the crown at the coronation. Richard Thorpe sets it among Technicolor palaces, where Princess Flavia (Deborah Kerr) is promised to the king, and the stand-in discovers that a borrowed life can cost him the one thing he cannot borrow.
