James Murray (Mel Gibson) takes charge of the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary in the mid 19th century, and entries start arriving by post, over 10,000 of them, from a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. Dr. William Chester Minor (Sean Penn) writes in from behind its walls. If the project fails, an enormous work of scholarship goes unfinished, and Minor's contribution may be all that holds it up.
