Joan Gordon (Barbara Stanwyck) is a nightclub singer who walks out on her gangster boyfriend and answers a mail-order bride notice for a struggling North Dakota farmer. Her new husband Jim Gilson (George Brent) is a plain, quiet man, and the first weeks between them go badly. William Wellman follows Joan as she begins to care for him, right when her old boyfriend turns up to claim her back.
