The Purple Rose of Cairo

In Depression-era New Jersey, Cecilia (Mia Farrow) waits tables for a living and spends what little she has on the movie theatre. After losing her job, she sits through "The Purple Rose of Cairo" again and again, watching the archaeologist Tom Baxter (Jeff Daniels) on the screen. Woody Allen follows a woman whose husband, Monk (Danny Aiello), offers her no comfort, and who has found somewhere else to put her hope.
