The Queen

(2006)Directed by Stephen Frears103 min · PG-13Drama, History
“Our Leaders. Ourselves.”

In the days after Diana's death in 1997, the royal family stays at Balmoral and says nothing, while outside the gates the flowers pile up and the public waits for a word. The Queen (Helen Mirren) sees a private loss, and the newly elected Tony Blair (Michael Sheen) sees a country that wants the Palace to show it grieves. Stephen Frears keeps her in the Highland estate and the long silences of a woman who has never once had to explain herself.
