“Passionate... Exciting... Intriguing... He bartered his soul for the SECRET of the cards!”

In czarist St. Petersburg, Captain Herman Suvorin (Anton Walbrook) watches other men gamble and cannot afford to join them. He hears the Old Countess Ranevskaya (Edith Evans) is said to have sold her soul for a card secret that never loses, and he sets out to get it from her. Thorold Dickinson places him beside Lizavetta Ivanova (Yvonne Mitchell), the countess's poor ward, whose trust he courts and whose hope of rescue he is willing to use.
