“Violence boiled in the wake of the quiet American!”

A body turns up in Saigon, and Inspector Vigot (Claude Dauphin) wants to know what the British journalist Thomas Fowler (Michael Redgrave) saw. Joseph L. Mankiewicz tells it looking back, as Fowler recalls how a young Vietnamese woman, Phuong (Giorgia Moll), came to be wanted by him and by the American (Audie Murphy). Fowler sits with Vigot at the end, a tired man going over the story, his face lit by the room.
