A drought has settled over a small Western town when Bill Starbuck (Burt Lancaster) rides in promising to bring rain for a price. Lizzie Curry (Katharine Hepburn), a plain, clever woman who keeps house for her father and brothers, is nearly resigned to being passed over, even by Deputy Sheriff J.S. File (Wendell Corey). Joseph Anthony adapted the film from a stage play, and it shows in how steadily he keeps the camera on the talk.
