Dr. Richard Vollin (Bela Lugosi), a neurosurgeon who has fallen hard for Poe, fixes his attention on Jean Thatcher (Irene Ware), the daughter of a judge. Edmond Bateman (Boris Karloff), an escaped criminal, comes to him for help, and Vollin answers by reshaping the man's face and putting him to use. Lew Landers directs it, keeping the castle-like house and its basement chamber close.
