The Red and the White

(1967)Directed by Miklós Jancsó90 minWar, Drama

It is 1919, and a unit of Hungarian Communists fights alongside the Bolsheviks near the Volga, where a monastery and a field hospital pass from the Reds to the Whites and back again. Andras (Tibor Molnár) and Laszlo (András Kozák) move through the open Russian field with little to tell them which side holds the ground they are crossing. Miklós Jancsó stages the fighting in long takes, so the camera keeps moving while the sides keep changing.
