A monk (Fernandel) just wants a bed for the night, and the lonely mountain inn where he stops with his fellow travelers looks like it will provide one. Then the innkeeper, Marie Martin (Françoise Rosay), confesses to him that she poisons the soup, robs the guests, and buries them out back. Claude Autant-Lara plays the confession for laughs, letting Fernandel's long, patient face carry the dread.
