In Cremona in 1681, the master Nicolo Bussotti (Carlo Cecchi) finishes a violin whose red varnish and fate are both bound up in a tarot reading. It passes through Austria, England and China before it reaches an auction house in Montréal, where the appraiser Charles Morritz (Samuel L. Jackson) begins to piece its history together. François Girard moves between the centuries with the same unhurried patience as the appraiser, letting each owner's story take its time.
