The Baron wants to keep working. Saved from the guillotine by his devoted dwarf Fritz, he settles in Carlsbruck as Dr. Victor Stein (Peter Cushing), a respected physician with a charity ward and a private laboratory. Terence Fisher puts Dr. Hans Kleve (Francis Matthews), a young doctor who recognizes him, at the center of the experiments, and Stein's patient Karl (Michael Gwynn) lies in the lab, bandaged, waiting.
