Lieutenant Dane Dumars (Matt Damon) and Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne (Ben Affleck) work narcotics in Miami, moving through the city's underworld with the routine of men who know the rules. A case pulls them deeper than usual, spinning out into complications that tighten around them. Carnahan keeps the pressure mounted and the camera moving, the investigation fracturing faster than the detectives can piece it together.
