Jack "Legs" Diamond (Ray Danton) comes to Prohibition-era New York as a jewelry thief with a sick brother, and he wants a bigger piece of the city than that. After a stretch in jail, he decides the smart money is in robbing other thieves and works his way close to Arnold Rothstein's booze, gambling, girls and drugs. Budd Boetticher shows a man gathering rivals, a police lieutenant and the women in his life, all of them now watching him.
