In Battle Creek, Michigan, at the start of the twentieth century, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins) runs a sanitarium built on clean living, strict diets and a deep suspicion of the bowels. Alan Parker sends in Eleanor Lightbody (Bridget Fonda) and her husband William (Matthew Broderick), who arrive unhappy and hoping the cure will fix more than his health. The marriage is what's really at stake.
