The Robe

(1953)Directed by Henry Koster135 minDrama, History
“The first motion picture in CinemaScope--the modern miracle you see without glasses!”

Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), a drunk and disillusioned Roman tribune, wins Jesus' robe in a dice game after the crucifixion. When his slave Demetrius (Victor Mature) escapes with it, Marcellus starts seeing visions he can't shake, and he goes after the robe, sure that destroying it will cure him. Henry Koster made this the first film in CinemaScope, but the story rests on one man who never held a faith and can't put down his guilt.
