The Romance of Astrea and Celadon
“A Rohmerian delight, another ritualized romance”
In a forest in Gaul, in the time of the Druids, the shepherd Céladon (Andy Gillet) and the shepherdess Astrée (Stéphanie Crayencour) share a love so chaste that neither has ever asked for more. Then a suitor's lie makes Astrée send him away, and Céladon throws himself into a river, pledging never to show his face to her again. Éric Rohmer, in his last film, treats a vow as binding as the love it was made for.
