The Rose

(1979)Directed by Mark Rydell125 min · RDrama, Music, Romance
“She gave and gave, until she had nothing left to give”

Mary Rose Foster (Bette Midler) is a rock singer in the late 1960s who gives everything she has to a crowd every night, and goes home to nobody. Rudge Campbell (Alan Bates), her business manager, keeps the tour moving, and Mark Rydell loosely bases her on Janis Joplin. The road keeps asking for more, and Rose pays for each show with whatever steadiness she has left.
