A family of former child prodigies, a tennis player, a novelist, and a business mogul, have all crashed into adulthood, each nursing private failures in their grandmother's Manhattan townhouse. Their father, Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman), estranged for years, returns claiming he is dying, intent on rebuilding what he destroyed. Anderson assembles them like figures in a dollhouse, the camera catching them in the hallway, a suitcase in hand, ready to leave.
