France, 1939, on the edge of a war, and the Marquis Robert de la Cheyniest (Marcel Dalio) opens his country estate for a weekend of hunting and a grand party. His wife Christine (Nora Gregor) and the aviator André Jurieux (Roland Toutain) move through the house, while the servants carry on their own affairs downstairs. Renoir keeps his camera moving through the rooms and corridors so that upstairs and downstairs share the same frame.
