The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash

(1978)Directed by Eric Idle, Gary Weis73 minComedy, Music, TV Movie
“A living legend that will live long after other living legends have died.”

Four lads from Liverpool want to be bigger than anyone has ever been, and a solemn television documentary has turned up to record how it happened. Dirk McQuickly (Eric Idle) narrates and plays along, with Ron Nasty (Neil Innes) beside him, in a film Idle and Gary Weis made as a straight-faced history of a band that never existed. Michael Palin's Eric Manchester talks to the camera in earnest tones, and the Pre-Fab Four stand grinning in their matching suits.
