The Saga of Gösta Berling

In 1920s Sweden, the young minister Gösta Berling (Lars Hanson) loses his pulpit for drinking and for sermons that go further than the congregation can bear. He is taken in as a tutor to a countess's stepdaughter, Elizabeth Dohna (Greta Garbo), and the two fall in love. Mauritz Stiller gives Garbo her first leading role, and the story leaves Gösta a defrocked man whose countess has a plan of her own.
