Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) is a Navy engineer who trusts machines more than people, and in 1926 he gets posted to the gunboat USS San Pablo on a Yangtze tributary. Robert Wise sets him against the ship's rice-bowl system and a China in revolution, where the crew's presence is less welcome every week. The friend he makes in the engine room, Po-han (Mako), is the person Jake has to answer to when the river turns hostile.
