Lee Barrett (George Maharis), a former security man, is pulled back in when a US germ warfare lab reports an accident and several scientists are dead. The fear is that a more virulent strain, the Satan Bug, has been stolen, a germ that could wipe out all life if it escapes. John Sturges keeps Lee close to Ann Williams (Anne Francis), the general's daughter, and their trust is the one thing the investigation leaves him.
