The Scapegoat

(1959)Directed by Robert Hamer92 minMystery, Crime, Thriller
“He took another man's name... lived another man's life... loved another man's woman!”

John Barratt (Alec Guinness) is a lonely English teacher on holiday in France who wants nothing more than to slip back into his quiet life. After a night of drinking, he wakes to find that Jacques De Gue, a French count who looks exactly like him, has vanished and left his estate, his wife and his domineering mother (Bette Davis) behind. Robert Hamer keeps the household polite and watchful, and every cold civility seems to cover a grudge.
