The Scarlet and the Black

(1983)Directed by Jerry London143 min · PGDrama, History, TV Movie, War
“Gregory Peck stars as the man who led thousands in a daring escape to freedom - right under the nose of the Gestapo.”

In Rome in 1943, Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty (Gregory Peck) is hiding downed pilots, escaped prisoners of war and Italian resistance families inside the Vatican's walls. Colonel Herbert Kappler (Christopher Plummer) commands the Nazi occupation outside them, and he decides O'Flaherty will be killed the next time he steps out. Jerry London builds the film on a priest who believes that sheltering the hunted is a duty of faith.
