The Scarlet Letter

Hester Prynne (Lillian Gish) is a seamstress in Puritan Boston, and the town has found out she has a child and will say who the father is. Victor Sjöström begins with the love between her and the kindly Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale (Lars Hanson), then follows the censure that falls on her once he returns from England. Hester stands in front of everyone who judges her and gives them no name.
