The Scarlet Letter

In 17th-century Salem, Hester Prynne (Senta Berger) has worn the scarlet A for seven years and still refuses to name the father of her child. Then an older stranger arrives, takes the name Chillingworth (Hans Christian Blech), and begins to study the young pastor Dimmesdale (Lou Castel), though only Hester knows he is her missing husband. Wim Wenders leaves her on the town's edge, the red letter on her dress, a ship waiting in the harbor.
