The Scarlet Letter

Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) came to the Massachusetts colony to build a life of her own, and she gets by as a seamstress in mid-1600s Boston. Then she is found to be pregnant, and the Puritan elders demand the father's name, which Hester will not give, though Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman) knows it. Roland Joffé sets the story among people who treat private feeling as public property, and the question is who gets to judge a woman's choices.
