“JOHN WAYNE - a skipper sworn never to be taken! LANA TURNER - the fuse of his floating time-bomb!”

War is declared as Captain Karl Ehrlich (John Wayne) slips his German freighter, the Ergenstrasse, out of Sydney with a British warship on his tail. He is an anti-Nazi but a proud German, and he carries orders to deliver Elsa Keller (Lana Turner) safely home. John Farrow's film runs on one stubborn idea: a man can despise the flag he sails under and still not turn back.
