The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister

Anne Lister (Maxine Peake) is a Yorkshire landowner in the 1800s who runs her estate on her own terms and writes down every day of her life in a code only she can read. Her great attachment is to Mariana Belcombe (Anna Madeley), a woman who is already married. James Kent keeps the two of them in drawing rooms and borrowed hours, where a letter or a glance has to carry what neither can say aloud.
