The Seventh Seal

“The story of a challenge to death.”

A knight comes home from the Crusades to a Sweden emptied by plague, and on the beach a figure in a black cloak is waiting for him. Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) cannot make himself believe in God, so he offers Death (Bengt Ekerot) a game of chess to buy more time. Ingmar Bergman sends him inland with his squire Jöns (Gunnar Björnstrand), where the board sits set up on the rocks by the sea.
