J.B. Books (John Wayne), the last of the legendary gunfighters, rides into Carson City to see his old friend Dr. Hostetler (James Stewart) and hears a diagnosis he can't shoot his way out of. He takes a room in a boarding house run by a widow and her son, hoping to spend what time is left in quiet. Don Siegel lets the household settle around him, and Bond Rogers (Lauren Bacall), wary of his reputation, slowly shifts from disapproval to a guarded tenderness.
