The Silence

Ester (Ingrid Thulin) is a sickly translator traveling home through an unnamed country on the brink of war, with her sister Anna (Gunnel Lindblom) and Anna's young son Johan. The three check into a near-empty hotel, where Anna takes up with a local man and Johan wanders the corridors alone. Ingmar Bergman leaves the sisters unable to talk to each other, and with a war closing in, one of them is ill enough that the stay may be her last.
