The Silence of the Sea

(1949)Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville87 minDrama, War

An elderly man and his niece in occupied France are told a German officer will be living in their house, and they decide to answer him with nothing at all. Werner von Ebrennac (Howard Vernon) comes down each evening and talks about his life and his hopes for France and Germany. Every word he offers gets no reply, and the film turns on how much a person can say to someone who will not speak back.
