The Simple-Minded Murderer

Sven (Stellan Skarsgård), a feeble-minded man, is left on his own when his mother dies, and he takes work as a farm-hand for the wealthy Höglund (Hans Alfredson). He gets no pay and sleeps in the barn with the cows. Hans Alfredson, who also directed, sets Sven's days beside Anna (Maria Johansson), the first person to treat him as a grown man, and the film keeps coming back to Sven alone with the animals.
