Why will the Hillcrists not sell a single field to the man who has bought everything around it? Mr. Hornblower (Edmund Gwenn) is the new money in a small English village, and Mr. Hillcrist (C. V. France) and his wife (Helen Haye) look down on his family and its mills. Hitchcock lets the quarrel over that land grow, with the Hillcrists' name and their daughter Jill (Jill Esmond) caught in it.
