Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) is a plastic surgeon who has spent years developing a synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His test subject is Vera (Elena Anaya), a volatile woman he keeps in his home and studies with the care of a man guarding his life's work. Pedro Almodóvar, adapting Thierry Jonquet's novel Tarantula, builds the film around the bond between this doctor and his patient, each of them holding the key to the other's obsession.
