“He's an unexpected education.”

Why does a village in Sarawak hand a young woman to the Englishman sent to govern it? John Truscott (Hugh Dancy) arrives in the 1930s to Westernize the Iban, and by local custom Selima (Jessica Alba) is assigned to sleep beside him and teach him their language and ways. Guy Jenkin follows the two of them as lessons turn into love, while colonists and villagers alike object to the marriage they plan.
