Frank Clemmons (Dirk Bogarde), a petty thief, breaks into a London house and is caught by its owner, the psychiatrist Dr. Clive Esmond (Alexander Knox). Instead of calling the police, the doctor offers him a deal: move in and be his test subject. Joseph Losey's first British feature puts Frank under one roof with Clive's wife, Glenda (Alexis Smith), and her interest in him puts the doctor's experiment, and Frank's freedom, at risk.
