“The Funniest Show on Earth!”

Matt (Bill Travers) and Jean Spenser (Virginia McKenna) are a married couple scraping by when a telegram says Matt's long-lost uncle has died and left them a cinema in Sloughborough. They hope to sell it for a small fortune, then find the place is falling down and nearly worthless. Basil Dearden keeps the film among the cinema's few odd staff, with Margaret Rutherford, Peter Sellers and Bernard Miles as the people who come with the building.
