The Smiling Madame Beudet
Madame Beudet (Germaine Dermoz), an intelligent woman trapped in a loveless marriage, begins to devise a scheme to be rid of her husband. Germaine Dulac, one of the first avant-garde directors, made this short silent film in 1923 in France, and it is often called one of the earliest truly feminist films. Madame Beudet and Monsieur Beudet (Alexandre Arquillière) share a house and a table, and nothing else.
